Morgantown’s climbing community is made up of locals, a large, transient student population and more and more visitors. The locals can be young or old and may have lived here since college or their entire lives. Many of the newer climbers are West Virginia University students introduced to rock climbing through the WVU Recreation center’s climbing wall and other university programs. You will see many of these student climbers spending their afternoons and weekends bouldering at Cooper’s Rock when they aren’t traveling to the nearby New River and Red River Gorges. Visiting climbers travel from Pennsylvania, Maryland, D.C. and as far as Canada to check out the “American Grit” often compared to the ‘gritstone’ of Great Britain.
The Climbers: Adam Polinski, Dan Brayack, Bill Webster, Tim Keenan, Ivan Jirak, Cal Swoager, Jan Kiger, Taylor Kasler, Thomas Martin, Jonathan Vickers, Eric Hörst and Carl Samples.
