Climbing Gyms
Climbing gyms are popping up in big cities, small towns, universities and fitness centers. Climbing, especially bouldering, is becoming more accessible and popular due to the elimination of geographic and economic barriers to the sport. More people than ever are being introduced to the sport in a variety of ways and others are able to climb and train consistently without weather, time or location limiting them. With more climbers and options, new interpretations and variations to climbing are being developed and increasing in popularity.

Many students were first introduced to rock climbing in 2001 when the West Virginia University climbing wall opened. The Nicros A.R.T. Wall was the center piece of WVU’s new Recreation Center. Designed to replicate the climbing found in West Virginia, the 50 foot wall has 3,500 square feet of climbing surface and 10 top ropes. A student climbing community quickly developed and now rock climbing, which is being featured in various ads, has become a center piece for attracting students to the university.
In 2004 a bouldering cave was built to add steeper more varied angles and in 2012 various training elements, such as HIT Strips, campus rungs and gymnastic rings were added.
